Not sure what you mean by Connect to LAN port, since the connection from your modem would go to the WAN "O" port on the downstairs AirPort. The "main" AirPort is set up to Create a wireless network. So to summarize, I setup the "Downstairs" one - Create a Wireless Network (Connect to LAN port) But, it is a much faster network because there is no speed loss in the Ethernet connection between the AirPorts. It's not more powerful.since the AirPorts provide a wireless signal no matter whether they connect together using wireless or wired Ethernet. If you did set things up manually, that is OK, but it would have been quicker and easier to let the "wizard" do this for you correctly and virtually automatically. This might be OK, but normally after you have been changing settings on an AirPort and trying to change its setup, it is better to reset the device again (to clear out all the old settings) so you can start over again from a known condition. It sounds like you got things set up manually. As the previous poster indicated this was the way to do this?
I am not extending or repeating any network wirelessly I don't think. But, your 1st AirPort is already setup in what is known as Bridge Mode, and all the Ethernet ports behave the same in Bridge Mode.as LAN ports. Normally, you would connect to the WAN port, since the WAN is considered the "input" port. I started downstairs by connecting an ethernet cable to the LAN port of the 1st AE Should I just remove any ethernet from the second device and let it work as designed? Or, should I "create a new network" on the second device as well and mimic the same SSID? (Connect another ethernet cable to that LAN port?) I unplugged it, everything came back to life. I then connected an ethernet cable to the LAN port on that unit which completely shut everything down. (Called it upstairs) I set it to also Bridge mode and to "extend wireless network". I then connected the 2nd Airport Extreme. (Called it downstairs) I opened up the Airport Utility and changed the mode to Bridge as I will let the FIOS modem/router handle IP address distribution. Connected the ethernet from the wall to the LAN port on the unit.
I then connected the 1st AirPort Extreme in a good spot downstairs. I turned "off" wifi on the FIOS modem/router.
I'm a little confused on how/where to connect the second one. My wifi was a little spotty on the second floor of our house so I picked up a couple of the latest Airport Extremes.
